SUKILOVE CLASSIC BELGIAN DEBUT ALBUM FROM 2002 REISSUED AND REMASTERED FOR FIRST TIME ON VINYL
‘SUKILOVE’ TO BE RELEASED APRIL 10th 2025 VIA JEZUS FACTORY
The first Sukilove album has long been overdue being issued on vinyl and Jezus Factory Records have lovingly arranged this to happen. The Belgian classic from 2002 has been freshly remastered for vinyl by original mastering engineer, Uwe Teichert of Elektropolis and the artwork has been rearranged for vinyl by Alain Rylant.
Sukilove disbanded in 2013 but in typical Sukilove/Jezus Factory timing reunited in 2024 for some warmly received reunion shows which have now stopped in time for the Vinyl finally coming out. After some illness and scheduling issues Uwe and Pascal sat down to remaster from the original tapes in September 2024 and the results are truly a joy to behold!
Sukilove formed in 2001 as a quieter antidote to the loudness of Pascal Deweze’s 90’s band Metal Molly.
With the help of a drummer living on the top floor in the same house (Stoffel Verlackt) and a stand up bass player who lives three houses to the right in the same street (Pieter Van Buyten), they suddenly turn into an acoustic live group called Sukilove. To make things a bit more difficult, the group is temporarily completed by Carol Van Dyk of Bettie Serveert and they mutate into a group called ‘Chitlin’ Fooks’. Under this moniker, they record two full albums filled with ‘dusty old folk and country music’ and tour the US in 2001.
March 2002 finally sees the release of the first Sukilove EP ‘Talking
in the Dark’, on the American Parasol label and later on the Dutch Waaghals
label.
The CD contains crackling home recordings, both acoustic and heartfelt. Meanwhile, they’ve been joined by extra guitar player Helder Deploige. In Belgium, the singles ‘Make sure my grave = kept clean’ and ‘Talking in the dark’ become radio hits on national radio (Studio Brussel and Radio 1). ‘Talking in the dark’ becomes ‘Hotshot’ of the week, climbs high in the Belgian alternative charts and is nominated for a ZAMU award in the category “Song of the year”.
They quickly gained a deal with PIAS with whom the first album was released. A European and US tour followed.
Sukilove released 5 studio LP’s and 3 EP’s. The first Sukilove album was an introspective affair and lyrically tackles themes of loneliness and relationships with a sometimes optimistic outlook.
The first Sukilove album spawned no less than 3 singles, Talking In the Dark, Shame You Never Worry and As Long As I Survive Tonight – Videos can be seen HERE
Sukilove never made the same record twice and their sound got harder towards the middle of their career, after the departure of original lead guitar player, Helder Deploige and the recruitment of Sjoerd Bruil (Dez Mona/Black Cassette/Millionaire) and culminated in the final wonky electronic rock 2012 album ‘Drunkaleidoscope’ which Helder came back for; this time on second drumkit!!
Since the band broke up in 2013 Pascal Deweze set up his own recording facility Studio Jezus and quietly became one of the most respected and in demand producers in Belgium.
Pascal also made the music for the elderly TV prank show ‘Benidorm Bastards’ (Off Their Rockers in the UK) which spawned the 60’s sounding band ‘Broken Glass Heroes’ alongside Tim Vanhamel.
He also found time to release an acclaimed solo album ‘Cult of Yes’ (2018) and has formed a band with his son called Kipgeweer (2024), toured with Warhaus and released music with Roosbeef (2023) who included the late Tom Pintens and colleague of Sukilove drummer Stoffel Verlackt in Flowers For Breakfast.
